Zimbabwean churches warn country faces 'genocide'
Harare (ENI). Church leaders in Zimbabwe have called on the United Nations and African regional groupings to step in to stem the violence that has been reported following disputed elections, and have warned that without intervention the country will witness genocide. "People are being abducted, tortured and humiliated by being asked to repeat slogans of political parties they are alleged not to support," the church heads, drawn from the Zimbabwe Council of Churches, the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops' Conference and the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe, said in a joint statement. Paraguay's 'bishop of the poor' elected president
Asunción, 23 April (ENI-ALC)--The election of former Roman Catholic bishop Fernando Lugo as president of Paraguay is a further sign of a left-wing shift in Latin America, according to observers of the region's political scene. Lugo, dubbed the "bishop of the poor", won the election on 20 April with promises to redistribute income and undertake land reform. His success represents a break with the political tradition of Paraguay, where the Colorado Party has ruled for 61 years. News of Lugo's win set off a huge party in Paraguay's capital, Asunción, and in other cities. "There were young people, entire families, elderly people brandishing Paraguayan flags, and with the word hope on their lips," said visiting Argentine pastor Juan Gattinoni, an election observer for the Latin American Council of Churches (CLAI). Church condemns 'cowardly' killing of Sri Lanka priest
Bangalore (ENI). Hundreds of people have attended the funeral of a Roman Catholic priest active in campaigning for human rights in Sri Lanka, who was killed in a bomb blast. The priest, the Rev. Mariampillai Xavier Karunaratnam, died when a roadside bomb exploded as he was driving home after conducting Mass on 20 April in Sri Lanka's northern Vanni region. This area of the country is under the control of rebels seeking autonomy for Tamil-majority areas in the north and east of the island. The priest died just days after he released a report calling for the United Nations to monitor human rights violations in Sri Lanka, and following, as the report put it, a "series of mass murders and disappearances of Tamil people". Lithuanian bishops condemn new abortion rule for doctors
Vilnius (ENI). Lithuanian Roman Catholic bishops are opposing a government decision that they say obliges all doctors to take part in pregnancy termination procedures, regardless of religious convictions. A medical norm for obstetricians and gynaecologists, adopted on 28 March, states that doctors must be prepared to perform abortions up to the 22nd week of pregnancy, as well as to be involved in assisted fertilisation and sterilisation. The Catholic Church believes that this means that doctors cannot refuse to take part in the termination of pregnancies. [354 words, ENI-08-0330]
